Craig Burshem is a Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General. He is the Section Chief for the Child Support Section within the Health, Education and Social Services Division.
Mr. Burshem supervises the fifty-fulltime child support attorneys that provide legal services to the Virginia Department of Social Services, Division of Child Support Enforcement. Last year the Child Support Section attorneys handled over a 120,000 child support hearings and collected over $11,000,000 through the use of civil contempt and incarceration of parents who were delinquent in paying child support.
Currently, Mr. Burshem is a participant on the National Judicial – Child Support Task Force. This task force includes judges, court personnel, and federal, state, and tribal child support administrators from across the nation. The task force has been convened by the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE) and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Judges to make recommendations for strengthening the relationship between the courts and child support enforcement agencies for the purpose of ensuring that America’s children receive the child support they are due on time and in full.
In 2010, the Governor of Virginia appointed Mr. Burshem to Virginia’s Child Support Guidelines Review Panel. The purpose of the panel is to review Virginia’s statutory child support guidelines considering current research and data on the cost of and expenditures necessary for raising children.
Prior to assuming his present duties, he was Regional Special Counsel for the Division of Child Support Enforcement, and Assistant Attorney General assigned to the Department of Social Services.
He started his legal career with the Tidewater Legal Aid Society in Norfolk and worked for the Poverty Law Center in Richmond Virginia.
He attended Florida International University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Management. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from the University Of Richmond School Of Law and is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
